Michael Carter, Jr.

Michael Carter, Jr. is an 11th generation farmer in the United States and is the 5th generation to farm on Carter Farms, his family’s century farm in Orange
County, Virginia where he conducts workshops, events and culturally enriching experiences intersecting various aspects of history, agriculture and culture. In addition he runs Africulture, a non profit dedicated to educating and expounding upon the principles,practices, plants and people of African descent that has contributed to agriculture and also the author of a best selling book of the same name, Africulture. He sits on numerous board of directors and have received numerous awards and acknowledgments for his agricultural endeavors. His academic background in agricultural economics from North Carolina A&T State University compliments his practical expertise, further enhancing his ability to consult with governments, organizations, and individuals on issues of food access, food security/insecurity,market outreach, and social and economic equity.

A natural educator, Michael also serves as a cliometrician, curriculum developer, and program coordinator for his educational platforms Hen Asem (Our Story) and Africulture, where he provides training in African cultural understanding, axiology, cultural literacy and cultural competence recognition. His course, Africulture, taught at the University of Virginia, delves into the contributions of Africans and African Americans to global agriculture, emphasizing the importance of racial equity and parity in food systems. In addition to his professional endeavors, Michael is committed to mentoring youth and supporting his community. He plays an active role in guiding his sons’ entrepreneurial ventures, Carter Brothers, while also coaching soccer and investing in the next generation of leaders
